What's it all about?

Cradle of Hills is not your average vineyard & winery! We, Paul and Tracy Smith, have professional backgrounds in organic horticulture and artisan wine-making. We came to McLaren Vale in 2008 with our two children, to quietly make small batches of 'slow' wines, reminiscent of those experienced in rural France. Using sustainable, organic farming practices, we have yet to be certified, but have the highest rating available as part of a regional Sustainable Wine growing program in McLaren Vale. With our best fruit and using artisan, low-intervention techniques (read: no yeast, enzyme or fining agent additions+More information is available on further low-intervention practices used throughout) we make 800 dozen bottles of wine pa at our on-site micro-winery. We are open at the farm by appointment only and 'sell out' each year to people looking for product where every step is considered and open for scrutiny to the buyer. Each appointment is private (except for occ. public open days) where we offer to educate and inform our customers on our particular techniques, the purity of our product and how our farming techniques suit and benefit our environment. We believe that making wines slowly, with our best fruit and low intervention artisan wine-making techniques, honours the farm environment, our work and our principles. We are, at times, listed among the highest ranked, small wineries in Australia.
